Presley Church

Apparel Material Innovation and Concept Developer at Nike as of August 2024.

My time as an undergraduate in Cornell University’s Fiber Science and Apparel Design program has provided me the opportunity to reflect on who I want to be, who I don’t want to be, and the way in which I want to take up space in the fashion industry and in the world.

Tactile work, design thinking, and creative problem solving run deep to my core… I have been sewing and creating since I was 4 years old.

Even so, I found myself taking breaks from fashion over the years. In such times I grew and learned and accomplished thanks to many mentors in the design, climate, and communication spaces. I bring these tools and perspectives to my work each time I return to design.

I am drawn to change-makers, future-thinkers, and action-takers.

I took a gap year in 2020-21 and became particularly engaged in a variety of communities: I phone banked and text banked and volunteered during the 2020 election; I grew into the creative climate communication community with Inside the Greenhouse; I grew into the science policy world with the Colorado Local Science Engagement Network; I co-authored a paper published in an Oxford Journal; and worked on a personal fashion collection.

After all that learning and growing, I returned to Cornell and found myself in fashion leadership roles with the Cornell Fashion Industry Network and the Cornell Fashion Collective, engaging intensely with the community in which I learn and create, and defining the ways in which Cornell Students engage with one another and the fashion industry.

In 2023 I spent the most amazing summer at Nike as a Global Apparel Material Development intern contributing to global sports apparel material development workflows. I have returned to Nike, full time, in a Material Innovation and Development work.

My undergraduate design career concluded with Luminary, my senior collection - the culmination of all that I am, all that I believe in, and all that I have achieved so far: stitching together design, science, activism, action, and intention.
