Trash the Runway

The 1920s are often considered an era of change, resistance, and glamor, and while that might be true, it was also an era of corruption and industrialization. This 1920s inspired dress embodies this spirit of freedom and new expression of the woman while fused with the weight of new economic systems, growing industry, increasing wage gaps, and the progression towards collapse in the 1930s. The 20 pounds of metal ball chain that make up this dress represent the economy, the government and the prosperity of manufacturing while the intricate designs and emulation of flapper style embody the new social norms and experience for women in this era.
